Rounded Rectangle: Introduction

A big hello to everyone, and welcome to the website of
Back Pain Solutions and Natural Therapies.

My name is Wayne Sibson, an osteopath based in Perth,
Western Australia, the proprietor of Back Pain Solutions
and a chronic low back pain sufferer myself.

My own experience of back pain spans some 20 years.
As you can imagine I have had plenty of opportunity to
sample the available therapies on offer to combat back pain.
Along the way I have been fortunate enough to find certain therapies that have provided me with much needed pain relief. These therapies include traditional osteopathic spinal manipulation; the sacroiliac technique of the Holma Method based on the Finnish bone-setting work of Jouko Holma ; the Dorn Method, a fantastic method of active joint mobilisation as taught to me by Dr Thomas Zudrell (International Dorn Method instructor); the Sarah Key method of spinal mobilisation using the feet ; and trigger point dry needling and biomesotherapy, a technique that is probably second to none in releasing chronic muscle shortening and tightness.

My approach to treating back pain is simple, I use techniques that along the way have helped me enormously to combat my low back pain, and I have discarded techniques that I have found to be ineffective. Ultimately I feel that I have a great package of techniques to draw from to help most people overcome or better manage their back pain.

How We Work

Back pain

Some times you need to look outside the square, to find treatments that are logical, safe and effective for back pain. With 20 years of back pain under my belt, I have certainly experienced most treatments currently on offer, and I believe that at Back Pain Solutions we provide treatment options for back pain that are second to none for most back pain conditions.

We recognise that the pelvis represents the foundation or platform of our skeletal structure, and consequently it would make sense that if the sacrum has an abnormal slope or tilt, then the spine must by design take on an abnormal curve. The sacrum is located at our centre of gravity and if our elastic limits are exceeded possibly through habitual holding patterns or injury, the sacrum will move away from its optimal position, typically tilting forward setting up a cascade of muscle contractions in the whole spine.

With thirty five or so muscles attaching to the pelvis, we believe that realignment of the sacrum and innominate bones is paramount and that the sacroiliac joint (between the sacrum and innominate bones) needs to be corrected in nearly every patient that we see. We believe that the sacroiliac misalignment holds the muscles in a chronic state of tension, so correction of this joint should always precede soft tissue work on these muscles.

The techniques we use are not commonly in use in Australia, as we have had to look further a field to Europe to source these techniques.

The sacroiliac realignment techniques that we use in our clinic are derived from the German manual therapy known as the Dorn Method and are performed in a standing position. We also use finnish bone-setting techniques derived from the Holma method, taught to our therapists by Timo Maaranen.

For neck and middle back problems we use standard osteopathic manipulation techniques coupled with soft tissue therapies such as trigger point dry needling, muscle energy technique and massage therapy.

Sports injuries

When treating sporting injuries we use soft tissue techniques derived from trigger point dry needling and massage. We also address skeletal alignment to achieve optimal alignment in the pelvis, spine and peripheral joints.

Spinal Decompression Therapy

Whilst we consider the pelvis as our foundation or platform, in my opinion we would be amiss to not consider the importance of the spine. The spinal structure is that of a tall column perched on a narrow base and with the human spine being vertical, our spinal segments squash down at the base.

This basal compression results in a squashing and flattening of our intervertebral discs which lose water. If the intervertebral discs between the lower lumbar vertebrae are squashed more than they are dragged or sucked apart, then there will be a net loss of fluid from the disc with a resultant disc height narrowing and trouble thrown onto our posterior compartment, our spinal facet joints. As the disc height is reduced, the upper facet will ride down the slope of the lower facet causing facet joint jamming and leading onward to facet joint degeneration.

At Back Pain Solutions we treat this all to common compression problem with a unique method of spinal mobilisation using our feet, a method pioneered by the gifted physiotherapist, Sarah Key, as well as more traditional osteopathic manipulation techniques.

We recommend the Spynamics Sacro Aligner tool be used by all our lower back patients to optimise their pelvic alignment, and to promote spinal decompression by simply placing a small book or pad under the aligner and resting with legs out straight with the body draped over the aligner for 60 seconds followed by a gentle spinal rocking exercise to promote rehydration of the intervertebral discs.

I truly believe that a if we can educate our patients as to the workings of their spine, mobilise their stiff links and overview a self help program using the Spynamics self help tool to keep discs buoyant, to minimise vertical compression so that the discs can suck in water, then wonderful recovery is possible from most lower back problems.
